And while it is the kind of nickname that speaks volumes about her fellow peers, for Baroness Audrey Emerton of Tunbridge Wells it is simply a sign she has arrived.
"It's taken me a long time, but when they say, 'Oh, matron says this or that', it's a term of endearment as far as they're concerned," she said.
