Carla Lane, who wrote popular sitcoms The Liver Birds, Butterflies and Bread, as well as running a Sussex animal sanctuary, has died aged 87.Set in Liverpool, The Liver Birds starred Polly James, Pauline Collins, Mollie Sugden, Elizabeth Estensen and Nerys Hughes and ran from 1969–78, before the series returned briefly in 1996.In 1989 the animal rights activist was awarded an OBE for her work but famously returned it in 2002 after Brian Cass, the managing director of Huntingdon Life...
