The first edition of the Highway Code was published 85 years ago on April 14 1931.
The guide, which remains one of Britain's best-selling books, was introduced in response to the high number of road deaths on the country's roads.
At the time there was no compulsory driving test and there were more than 7,000 deaths caused on the roads a year.
