PEGGY Fortnum, the Tunbridge Wells trained illustrator who brought Paddington Bear to life on the page, has died at the age of 96.
Commissioned to illustrate the first volume of Michael Bond's children's stories in 1958, she went on to work on the next eight Paddington books, gaining a worldwide audience for her unique vision of the marmalade-loving bear from darkest Peru.
